Fewer Ohio workers were affected by mass layoffs in November compared with a year ago.
Mass layoffs affected fewer Ohioans this November than in 2010, but the number spiked from last month when less than half as many workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Thursday.
The bureau reported that 66 employers laid off 6,017 employees in November, down from 6,234 during the same time period a year ago. But layoffs of at least 50 workers more than doubled from October, when 2,616 Ohioans were sent to the unemployment line by 29 employers’ large-scale cuts.
Ohio followed a nationwide trend of increases over the previous month. Nationwide, 1,331 employers cut 129,887 workers, more than a quarter of which came in the manufacturing sector. In October, 118,689 workers filed initial claims for jobless benefits.
